So for a record 8th time he came, he saw and he conquered without even dropping a set. After 5 summers that yielded a number of personal ups and downs Roger Federer rules SW19 once more and has already been installed as favourite for next year!
We all know he's a genius and with 19 grand slam titles under his belt the GOAT argument has surely been put to bed ( for now at least! ) His progress, helped admittedly by a pretty kind draw, was serene and his tennis hit the heights when required, noticeably with those 5 breath-taking unanswered points from love-3 in the third set tie-break against Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals.
The final was horrendously anti-climactic of course and, in truth, the 2017 Championships won't be remembered as one of the finest in Wimbledon's golden history. Yet watching Federer play the best tennis of his life at the ripe old age of 35 was a thrill and a privilege. Long may he continue to hold back time!
The women's singles provided some of the best matches and a strong narrative throughout. Predicting a winner was nigh on impossible until Garbine Muguruza suddenly seized control of the final with Venus Williams who's own return to form has been entirely in fitting with this "retro" year.
Jo Konta demonstrated her new found mental resilience with hard fought wins against Donna Vekic, Caroline Garcia and Simona Halep. I'm still not convinced she has fully won over the hearts of the British tennis public but, having risen to four in the world, she's clearly here to stay and a first slam may not be far away.
